What to bring from Lithuania and Latvia? What to bring from Vilnius? What to buy souvenirs in Vilnius
Moms, dads, grandfathers and grandmothers, sisters, brothers, friends and loved ones, as well as yourself, definitely need something as a souvenir... for many tourists, the issue of gifts can turn into quite a headache. Fortunately, Lithuania differs from many European countries in that globalization has not yet taken over the tourism industry here, and you can find many truly Lithuanian souvenirs.
What else sets Vilnius apart from many European cities is that you can safely buy souvenirs in the most tourist places, without fear that they will ask for disproportionate money for them. Even residents of Vilnius will buy a pair of woolen mittens from some grandmother selling them on Piles Street - in the very center of the city’s tourist life.
Alcohol
The most typical alcoholic drinks for Lithuania are herbal liqueurs (trauktines) and mead (midus) of varying strengths (from 12 to 75 degrees). The largest producers of the former are the Vilnius Degtine plant and the Kaunas Stumbras plant. Among specific brands we can note “999” of three different types, “Starka”, “Čepkelių”.
Meads are produced under the Lietuviškas Midus brand. They are sold both in regular bottles and in souvenir bottles (ceramic or in the form of a barrel). There is also a set of six small bottles with various tinctures on sale. The 75-degree honey balm Žalgiris deserves special attention. Its strength is the result of distillation, and not dilution with ethyl alcohol.
Edible souvenirs
Candies and other sweets were brought from Lithuania back in Soviet times. “Karūna”, “Pergalė”, “Rūta” are brands that are popular today. The latter offers various options for gift sets, sometimes weighing up to 2 kg, decorated in a Lithuanian theme. However, carefully read the composition: some sets are designed for amateurs, such as “Gintaro kelias”, which look beautiful and interesting, but a third consist of licorice gelatines.
In addition to factory sets, sweet gifts can be collected individually in chocolate shops (Šokoladinė), choosing each candy to your taste. This is a real paradise for those with a sweet tooth - in addition to handmade sweets, you will find a variety of figured chocolate there, from the Lithuanian chocolate card to the chocolate Kama Sutra, and other sweets. There are small chocolate shops in every shopping center, and in the Old Town of Vilnius there are many cafes where you can drink a cup of coffee in a calm atmosphere of chocolate comfort and at the same time buy chocolate souvenirs.
Cheese is another option for a tasty and at the same time practical gift. There are many cheeses produced in Lithuania: smoked, processed, sausage, curd, such as Parmesan - it is impossible and pointless to talk about them all. You just have to choose your favorite type and try it. If you don’t have a favorite among the cheeses, but want to bring something home, pay attention to the Lithuanian parmesan cheese “Džiugas”. It comes in different types, depending on the aging period - from 2 to 48 months. It is packaged both in small, cute packages and as gifts (in addition to a piece of cheese in the package you will find a cutting board, a special knife for hard cheese and a jar of honey).
Experienced tourists who have been to Lithuania more than once bring bread from here. First of all, rye. This may seem strange to some, but until you try it. After all, you can’t find good bread everywhere these days. Some tourists vacationing in Lithuania note that they had no idea how delicious bread could be.
Amber, ceramics and other Lithuanian souvenirs
Amber is the first thing that comes to mind when you think about souvenirs from the Baltics. It is interesting that amber products in Lithuania differ from, for example, Latvian ones, in shape, predominant colors, and style. Even if you don’t plan to buy, it’s still worth admiring them, holding them in your hands, and holding the stones up to the light. Who knows, maybe you will like something... There is never too much amber jewelry - after all, each stone is good and unique in its own way: white amber in the finest golden web and an inexpensive stone in silver.
Wooden toys are a good option for those from whom children expect gifts. Toys are sold in almost all souvenir shops in the Old Town. It's surprising how varied their selection is. In stores with a good assortment there are toys not only for babies, but also for older children.
Linen items are another option for a successful souvenir or memorable purchase. These can be either banal table napkins or a shoulder bag, or stylish dresses, hats, various accessories and jewelry.
Leather and clay products of Lithuanian craftsmen can be found on the main tourist artery - Pilies Street.
Sports souvenirs
Sports fans also have something to bring from Vilnius. The national Lithuanian sport is basketball, and basketball souvenirs, from scarves in team colors to balls signed by famous basketball players, can be found in almost any shopping center.
The theme of basketball is also covered in sweet souvenirs. Factory "Ruta" offers fans will take home a chocolate basketball weighing 600 grams. On its packaging you will find the words of Lithuanian basketball player Robert Javtokas: “Saldžiausia pergalė yra ta, kuri vienija visą tautą” (The sweetest victory is the one that unites the whole nation). If someone can’t handle a 600-gram ball, you can limit yourself to a 100-gram ball—those are also on sale.
For those who have not yet forgotten that a book is the best gift, the photo album “Neregėta Lietuva” (“Unprecedented Lithuania”) is sold in Lithuania. Of course, this is not the only book with beautiful views of Lithuania, but this one differs from the others in its perspective: all the photographs were taken from above, the author took photographs while flying on gliders, helicopters, airplanes and hot air balloons.
If you are planning to travel to Lithuania, this article is for you. We will tell you what souvenirs you can bring from Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipeda, Palanga and other cities of this country. Our goal is to make your shopping in the Baltics as comfortable and interesting as possible. With the list below at hand, you won't miss anything.
In Lithuania, tourists usually buy the same things as in Estonia and Latvia, but this country also has unique souvenirs that would be difficult to find anywhere else. We will try to guide you on prices and tell you where to go shopping. We hope this saves you time and money.
Let us remind you that the national currency of Lithuania is the euro. Exchange offices and banks are not difficult to find, but it is much more profitable to go to Lithuania with exchanged money. Don't forget about the tax free system. Look for stores marked with the "Global Blue" logo; in them you can receive checks for a VAT refund of 21% (the main condition is a one-time purchase of 55 euros). You can receive a tax refund at the border.
So, what can you bring from Lithuania?
Lithuanian sales are a real paradise for a shopaholic, because prices during the discount season are sometimes reduced by up to 80%. Remember that summer sales in Vilnius, Kaunas, Siauliai, Klaipeda and other cities of this country begin in June, and winter sales in December.
European brands
It’s really worth bringing clothes from your favorite European brands from Lithuania. The choice here is wider than in Russia and Belarus, and the prices are lower. All new collections appear first in EU countries, and only then are transported (with a premium) to the CIS countries. The best time to go shopping in Vilnius, Kaunas and other cities is during the sales season.
We recommend taking a stroll through the chain shopping malls “Acropolis” (they are in almost all major cities of Lithuania), the “Mega” shopping center in Kaunas, “Saules Mestas” in Siauliai or “Big” in Klaipeda. In these shopping centers you will find both familiar brands and those that are no longer (or not yet) sold in Russia and Belarus.
Lithuanian brands
You can buy clothes from Lithuanian manufacturers in regular shopping centers. The most famous company is Grizas. Perhaps only clothes from this Lithuanian brand are worth bringing home from Lithuania. At least other local firms are not in demand in Europe.
Linen
The Baltic states have been famous for linen items since the times of the USSR. In those years, the countries of the Baltic Three produced high-quality and inexpensive home textiles, clothing, and accessories. Today, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania are still involved in flax production.
Buy linen napkins, beautiful embroidered tablecloths, bags, summer clothes and other things in Lithuania. It’s even more profitable to bring sheets and pillows from the Baltic states rather than buy them in Russia. You can find linen items in shopping centers, specialty stores and tourist shops. Prices start from 4-5 euros for small accessories, from 15-18 euros for tablecloths, from 25-30 euros for simple women's sundresses.
Woolen items
Most often, woolen items appear on almost everyone's shelves around Christmas, but you can buy them in Lithuania at any time of the year - carefully study the assortment of souvenir shops. Buy mittens, socks, scarves and hats with traditional Lithuanian and Baltic patterns as gifts for yourself and your loved ones.
You can also find handmade items in tourist shops and street stalls. Prices for simple goods (like mittens and socks) start from 10-12 euros.
Leather
It is worth bringing handmade leather items from Lithuania. We are talking about wallets, purses, cosmetic bags, bags and covers for documents. Things are high quality, beautiful, interesting. Look for them at Akropolis or from street vendors. The prices are not too low: from 25-30 euros for wallets, from 40-50 euros for clutches, etc. But it still makes sense to buy them in Lithuania, since they will serve for years.
Cosmetics
Women should look for Lithuanian cosmetics from the Margarita company on the shelves - it is definitely worth bringing to Russia from Lithuania for all fans of natural products. Pay attention to the entire line of products from this company (you can buy it not only in specialized stores, but sometimes in supermarkets). Cosmetics from Lithuania have very good reviews, and their prices are not bad. It’s worth taking a couple of products to try for yourself or as a gift.
Dzintars cosmetics are often brought from Lithuania (they are made in Latvia, but sold throughout the Baltic states). If you are familiar with these products, it makes sense to buy your favorite products - the prices are about the same as in their homeland.

Souvenirs
In Lithuania you can buy many interesting and useful things for your home. It's not hard to find great gifts for loved ones. In street markets, tourist shops and shopping centers there is a huge selection of souvenirs that are really worth bringing home.
Amber
As with other Baltic countries, you can bring amber from Lithuania. Not in its pure form, of course - it is prohibited. Buy interesting souvenirs decorated with amber stone (figurines, boxes, lamps) as a gift for yourself and your loved ones. We advise women from Lithuania to bring jewelry with amber as a gift: pendants, earrings, bracelets, etc. Don’t be afraid to buy amber even in ordinary tourist shops - local traders are not guilty of fakes, and they almost never raise prices. On the contrary, prices for amber jewelry in Lithuanian jewelry and specialty stores are usually higher.
Glass
Women can also bring glass earrings or a ring as a gift from Lithuania. It sounds unusual, but these jewelry are really worthy of attention, and they cost about 3-4 euros. Look for them in souvenir or specialty stores. Street vendors offer a good selection, and you can also find a lot of interesting things in Akropolis.
Also in Lithuania it is worth buying small figurines made of colored glass, unusual dishes and home accessories. Carrying this fragile material is problematic, but if you take something small, then nothing bad should happen.
Ceramics
As in other Baltic countries, you can buy excellent ceramics in Lithuania. We advise you to pay attention to mugs and cups with engravings in the shape of Lithuanian towers and houses - this is one of the most popular souvenirs. You can buy such mugs in almost any souvenir shops. But if you have time, we recommend checking out at least 3-4 tourist shops (preferably on the outskirts) and comparing prices. It happens that in one shop in Old Vilnius you will see a mug for 15 euros, and in the next one - for only 9.
Tree
If you want to bring a gift for your child from Lithuania, buy local wooden toys. Their prices start from 5-8 euros. These simple, bright and environmentally friendly little things have excellent reviews and are in great demand among tourists not only in Lithuania, but throughout the Baltic states.
In addition, in Vilnius and other cities of this country it is worth buying wooden boxes, dishes and other home accessories. If you take a good look around the souvenir shops while shopping, you can find exclusive items for little money.

Chocolate
The most famous Lithuanian chocolate producers are Karuna and Ruta. Their products (sweets, chocolates) can be found in supermarkets at fairly affordable prices. It makes sense to bring them from Lithuania as a gift for yourself and your loved ones.
We advise gourmets to go to any of the so-called “Shokoladin”. This is what cafes are called in Vilnius. Where you can drink real hot chocolate and try handmade sweets. The pleasure is not too cheap, but still the prices are not exorbitant. Why not bring a unique sweet souvenir from Vilnius? Chocolate tolerates the road very well.
Bread
Baltic bread is praised by many tourists. This is not surprising: it is really fresh, tasty, and of high quality. In Lithuania you can buy bread with interesting flavors: for example, with cumin. Take it on the go or bring it home if you love homemade bread (there are loaves that don't spoil within a week).
Sausage
If you remember the taste of Soviet sausage, in Lithuania you will have a chance to taste it again. Look at farmers' markets for "Tarybine" (translated as "Soviet"). At the same time, buy smoked pork ears, sausages with additives (juniper, pepper, mushrooms, etc.), game delicacies, kindziukas (smoked delicacy made from minced pork with lard, garlic and spices, wrapped in a pork stomach) and other culinary delights – you can really buy a lot of interesting things in Lithuania. You won’t be able to bring farm produce home (there is no factory packaging), but we definitely recommend trying it on the spot.
Cheese
During gastronomic shopping in Lithuania, you will find a huge selection of delicious cheeses. The Baltic states are generally famous for their highest quality dairy products. Stop by farmers' markets to taste and buy authentic country cheese. Just keep in mind that it will not be possible to bring such products to Russia from Lithuania - farm cheeses do not have factory packaging, and when crossing the border there is no way without this.
But you can go to the supermarket and buy factory-made cheeses “Džiugas, Rokiškio, Svalia”: they can be exported from Lithuania to Russia, as they are sold in packages. But keep in mind that you can take no more than 5 kilograms with you. Prices for factory cheeses average about 8-10 euros per kilogram, and there are often promotions.
In search of aged cheese, you can look into Džiugas stores (the cheese has the same name). Here you can buy interesting gift sets that make sense to bring from Lithuania as a gift to your loved ones. These shops also sell special boards and knives for cutting cheese and the honey with which it is usually eaten. In short, choosing a gift will not be difficult.
Apple cheese
Obuolių sūris is not really cheese. More precisely, not cheese at all. This is a sweet treat that all gourmets should bring home from Lithuania. Apple cheese is a dense, dark and viscous handmade marmalade sold in cheese-like heads. Nuts and dried fruits are often added to it. Its taste is difficult to compare with anything - it is unique.
You can buy this cheese in some cafes and diet food departments, and sometimes you can find it at fairs.

In a word, it is not very different from traditional Baltic liqueurs.

If you want to bring home a large bottle of Three Nines tincture, check out the supermarkets in Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipeda, Palanga and other cities - it will be more profitable to buy it there. Prices for tincture start from 7-8 euros per 0.5 liter.

2016-07-25Lithuania is a small country that will not take much time to get to know. Some will unfairly say that she is practically not famous for anything, but this does not mean that there is nothing to see here. The Baltic republic has a difficult but rich history, with a crushing fall and a triumphant revival. Magnificent streets about which entire books are written, marvelous cathedrals that rival the best sanctuaries in France and Germany, a one-of-a-kind museum located in the hollow of a tree, mythical forests where ancient spirits hide, blooming gardens full of bright flowers and enchanting aromas, the sea, marvelous, endless and unruly - all this creates an excellent atmosphere for relaxation in this part of the Baltics. It is only important to think about your vacation in advance and plan where to go, what to see and what to buy. From a state with a rich culture and identity, you can definitely bring a whole range of magnificent souvenirs, and you won’t have to think long about what to choose. However, in every city in Lithuania you can always find something unique - something that is available only there and nowhere else.
Souvenirs and gifts from Lithuania
The most common souvenirs from Lithuania will be products made from amber, often called “Lithuanian gold”. There is even a special route for tourists here - the “Lithuanian Amber Route”, so there is no doubt about the significance of the gift. Things made of amber can be found both in large stores and in small shops. Each bright stone carries a ray of sunshine and has its own shape and shade. The souvenir may contain only inclusions of the mineral or consist entirely of it. Decorations and jewelry, paintings, writing instruments, key chains, candlesticks, amulets, figurines - in a word, you can choose anything and even ask for something to be created for an individual order. As a rule, natural amber products are made by hand, so their value increases. Finding genuine pebbles in such abundance is not easy, because modern technologies make it possible to imitate this splendor almost without any difference from the real thing. Since artificial amber is created from plastic, glass or synthetic resin, it can smell unpleasant when heated. It also reacts to contact with acetone, leaving traces. When exposed to external influences, the fake retains noticeable damage on its surface, while the original only crumbles. Natural amber smells like pine needles or is odorless, does not react to acetone and is not scratched. The most obvious difference is the low cost of the item.
Alcohol in Lithuania includes delicious liqueurs, all kinds of liqueurs and beer. Lithuanian balms are famous all over the world, so they can be a wonderful gift for loved ones and friends. The recipe has been preserved since the Middle Ages, when warriors took strong drinks with them as medicine. Today their appearance has changed somewhat, but they try to maintain the composition in the old fashioned way. For example, “Zalgiris” is a strong balm infused with honey. It has a burning strength - as much as 75%. Linden blossom, cranberry juice, thyme, juniper berries and other useful medicinal plants are added to it. The rich taste matures over two years, and the strength is achieved through a special type of distillation. It is not recommended to drink or snack on Zalgiris, otherwise the true palette of taste will remain undiscovered.
The “Three Nines” tincture, prepared with 27 herbal products, stands out as a special combination. The recipe for this example of culinary heritage originated many centuries ago. The ingredients included in it symbolize the air (flowers and fruits), earth (bark and herbs) and underground (roots) spheres. Honey is also added to it. The bitter taste with tart sweetish notes and rich aroma captivate you from the first tasting. Drink it in small glasses or add it to juices and cocktails.
Vodka from Lithuania has its own original character, different from the Russian variety. Of the highest quality, it is produced in local factories with the addition of rye, oats and wheat, and has a pure taste and aroma. Today, aromatic additives are added to Lithuanian vodka, including pepper, cranberry, tangerine, cherry, honey and coffee, which makes it unconventional.
Samane is another specific type of alcohol from Lithuania, which is an aromatic whiskey. It is prepared by infusing it with rye. It can be safely called a gift for gourmets. Local producers are also famous for their delicious Svyturus beer, but it is recommended to buy it fresh, otherwise it will quickly spoil on the road. In general, it is better to purchase alcohol in branded stores. This reduces the risk of buying a “scorched” drink, which will not bring delight, but disappointment and trouble.
Lithuanian cheese is an excellent yummy gift and a real pride of the country. Cheese from Lithuania has been famous among Russians since Soviet times. Some of his recipes have been preserved since the era of the Principality of Lithuania. The technology differs in that the cheese mass is heated not once, but twice - this gives a more subtle creamy taste and uniform consistency. The largest cheese producers in the country are Rokiškio Suris and Peno Žvaigždes. A large number of varieties are produced in small farms. Particularly popular among tourists are hard cheese with cumin, soft Nemunas and smoked cheese. You can taste such a gift in accordance with Lithuanian traditions, serving it with black bread, honey and spices. A slightly unusual combination will certainly please both a connoisseur of this dairy product and a big fan of delicious food.
The simplest gifts for work colleagues and distant acquaintances are various little things with symbols of Lithuania and Lithuanian names. Mugs and keychains, mini mirrors, magnets and T-shirts are all relatively cheap but extremely nice trinkets.
What to bring from Vilnius
Vilnius is the capital and largest city of Lithuania and is included in the UNESCO heritage list. Being a large trade center, it will delight lovers of economical European shopping. Even with a small budget, it’s easy to find a worthy gift for a friend or family. The main shopping street leads from the Old Town - Gediminas Avenue. Piles Street is no less famous among tourists who come for shopping from neighboring countries.
Linen products
Where can I buy:
- clothing store Lt Identity, Uzhupio g. 2a.
The real brand of Vilnius is linen. The only European factory for the production of clothing and home linen textiles operates here. As a result, Lithuania has the cheapest linen products in Europe; they can be found much more expensive in Germany and Denmark. People come here to buy gifts from Belarus, Poland and the Czech Republic.
Lithuanian flax has been grown in the state for several thousand years. Wardrobe items made from it are practical for everyday wear, do not cause allergies, are close to the body, allow the skin to breathe, and remove excess moisture from the body. Not only clothes are made from linen fabrics, but also bags, accessories, bed linen, tablecloths, towels, pillows, scarves, slippers, toys, etc. There are a lot of shops specializing in the sale of linen products in Vilnius, the main thing is to choose among such a variety quality copy. The appearance of real flax is dim threads, natural shades of gray, light brown, ivory in its structure. A rich color is a sign of impurities from cotton or even synthetics, that is, its impurity and unnaturalness. The linen fabric is smooth to the touch, without unevenness or protruding threads, gives off a cool feel, and wrinkles when squeezed in your hands.
When the choice is finally made and the gift is given, it is worth reminding its new owner about the proper care of linen fabric. In order for clothes to last for a long time, it is better to wring them by hand, like other linen textiles. The material should be ironed slightly damp - then the model will fit perfectly. Linen clothing is pleasant to the body, good for the skin, and does not cause irritation or allergies.
Dishes
Where can I buy:
- Ceramics Center, Kauno g. 36/7.
The high quality and original style of Lithuanian ceramics is pleasing to the eye. This can include practical dishes, souvenir figurines, candlestick houses with windows, and decorative hanging panels. Ceramics are made from clay with various mineral additives added to it for strength. The dishes are carefully formed according to the sketch, sculpted, dried, covered with glaze and only then fired.
This is followed by a careful selection of defective products. Some objects are not glazed, but are immediately fired. Clay items do not contain chemical impurities, and plates, pots and cups retain the authentic aroma and taste of the product they contain. Such things are usually made by hand, painted with a unique, inimitable pattern that repeats ethnic, plant and animal motifs. They can become an integral part of the interior, make the atmosphere more comfortable, and reflect the taste of the owner. Increasingly, on the shelves you can see analogues made not by potters, but with the help of machines. A plate or mug of this kind costs much less, because handmade work is especially valued these days.
Men will approve of beer mugs as a gift, women - a set of plates or a tea set, children - a colorful panel for the room. Many beautiful products in Vilnius are made from decorative glass - these can be jewelry, figurines, wine glasses or original vases of unusual shape and color. All glass souvenirs are created like Murano glass, but with a Lithuanian touch. Bright patterns on its texture make you admire them for hours.
Sweets
Where can I buy:
- Senamiescio krautuve, Literatu g. 5;
- AJ Chocolate - Chocolate Restuarant, Pilies g. 8.
A delight for children and joy for all those with a sweet tooth - a sweet gift from Vilnius. These could be candies, chocolate of the Karuna and Ruta brands - manufacturers of mass goods, very good in taste. Guests of the city are offered a choice of entire sets created in a Lithuanian theme. Coffee shops in the Old Town also sell cute chocolate figurines.
One such place where you can not only buy top-class candies, but also enjoy hot chocolate is AJ Chocolate. There are also special establishments in Vilnius, the so-called “Chocolates”, where confectioners create sweets by hand and to individual orders. Here it won’t be difficult to find a chocolate map of Lithuania or some monument to the capital made from cocoa powder, butter and sugar. They can also make a portrait or figurine of any person or animal. They started producing chocolate here at the end of the 19th century; with a long history, its recipe has remained unchanged, which is why it captivates guests.
A specific sweet souvenir from Vilnius must be shakotis, which means “branchy” in Lithuanian. It is an unusual dessert that looks like a tree with branches sticking out in different directions or even a Christmas tree. The original appearance is far from the only feature of the cake, if you can even call it that. The history of its origin is also interesting. During the time of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the Lithuanian queen organized a competition for cooks from all over the area and promised a generous reward for a new, unusual dish that would be invented.
One young chef was lucky enough to take part in the competition while his mentor was ill. But at first luck was not on his side. In the evening, sitting by the open fireplace and wrapping the remaining dough on a spit, he suddenly noticed that the mass was taking on an unusual branch shape and also emitting a surprisingly pleasant aroma. The cook baked more branches and collected them into a single tree. The sweetness captivated the queen, and the young master was accepted into the royal kitchen, generously rewarded. Shakotis is cooked over an open fire, turning on a spit and periodically adding more dough on top. The flowing mass forms an interesting shape. Five dozen eggs, 1 kg of butter, sugar, several glasses of cream and a little cognac are added to the dough for 1 kg of flour.
Such a delicacy is inexpensive - the smaller the size of the shakotis, the lower its price. This sweetness is gaining more and more popularity in the world, and Lithuania sends it to neighboring Poland, Belarus and even Switzerland. All thanks to the long shelf life of the dessert and its unique appearance. In the Republic of Lithuania, this is a traditional wedding treat, additionally decorated with icing and chocolate. Such a sweetness will definitely delight and surprise your loved ones.
Bakery products
Where can I buy:
- Pinavija Cafe & Bakery, Vilniaus g. 21;
- Ida Basar, Lt Subachiaus g. 3.
They make very tasty bread in Vilnius, and the most interesting examples can only be found in small private bakeries or on the market. Reliable places for quality shopping are Pinavija Cafe & Bakery and Ida Basar. Only here bread is created according to old village recipes. The most popular varieties are Vilnius ("black"), Palanga (a mixture of wheat and rye flour), Bochu (with cumin).
Rye bread is prepared with natural sourdough with a brew based on the addition of cumin, malt and honey; sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds and flaxseed are added to wheat bread. And no yeast. It is much better absorbed by the body, facilitates the digestion process without harming the intestinal microflora, does not cause gas formation, and retains more nutrients. In addition, it is stored longer than yeast. High-quality bread according to traditional recipes turns out fragrant and moderately soft.
Someone will say that there are a lot of recipes now, and if you have an electronic bread machine, it’s a simple science to make the product at home. However, such technology requires a certain skill and will definitely be overwhelming for a beginner. This gift will be useful for those who care about their health. But delicious bread can please both lovers of original-tasting baked goods and adherents of gastronomic tourism.

Such places are open on one weekend from about noon for three to four hours.
A popular place to buy clothes is the Gariunai market. It was opened in Vilnius a couple of decades ago, but still attracts tourists with its prices and variety. If you want to come here to buy clothes, you need to go in the morning - after lunch, the retail outlets are already closed. The capital's craftsmen make very high-quality leather goods - belts, jackets, bags and wallets, which will be appreciated by those who like to purchase natural materials and accessories for their wardrobe.

What to bring from Kaunas
The second largest Lithuanian settlement is Kaunas, a real city of museums, full of green parks and places for cultural recreation. The large number of markets and shopping centers here are almost more diverse than in Vilnius. From here you can also bring a large number of high-quality and beautiful things.
Tree
Where can I buy:
- Linas Shop, Vilniaus g. 32.
All people are connected to nature - this closeness is expressed in the use of materials taken from forests, rivers and earth. Kaunas craftsmen have been processing wood for many hundreds of years, passing on their skills from generation to generation. A smooth design without sharp corners, an abundance of small details or simplicity, the use of paints or simply emphasizing the structure of the material - the process occurs in different directions.
Wooden items will not only decorate the room, but will also be actively used in everyday life. They store the energy of natural material. Wooden souvenirs are not too expensive, and their variety is great, because almost any object can be created from wood. These often include containers for bulk and liquid products. The aroma of wood remains almost unchanged even when filled. A set of coasters for hot dishes will complement evening tea and family dinners, and will decorate a colleague’s office routine. A box for sewing supplies or jewelry will be appreciated by your mother or grandmother. Some men use boxes to store important documents or savings, so the souvenir will fit perfectly into a businessman’s office.
Bracelets and earrings, necklaces and beads made of natural wood with a unique pattern and emphasized woody texture of the species will delight your sister or friend. Small children will enjoy various noisy toys, turrets, and cubes. Puzzles and other wooden games will definitely keep schoolchildren busy. Fans of unusual interior solutions will love candlesticks, lamps or hangers made from natural Lithuanian wood.
Meat products
Where can I buy:
Meat products from Kaunas have excellent taste and original recipes - this is a real delight for lovers of meat and meat dishes with unusual additives. For example, true smoked sausage is produced here using traditional technology: pork ham and bacon are mixed, the resulting minced meat is stuffed into a natural casing of intestines, it is shaped into a ring and dried, retaining a small amount of moisture. It retains its freshness and taste for a long time. Green, white, and red peppers, juniper, porcini mushrooms, and lingonberries are also added to the sausage. The meat can be not only pork, but also beef, and some specimens are made from wild boar and venison. The most delicious sausage should mature for a couple of months. During this time, it acquires a beautiful marble pattern or uniform texture, and also enriches the pulp with aroma. Presented at the holiday table and on weekdays, the sausage will be eaten instantly!
Separately, it is worth mentioning the famous sausage with the original name “Tarybine”, which translates as “Soviet” - this is a brand with half a century of history. Its taste has remained unchanged since the times when the Baltic states were part of the USSR. Bright red packaging with a portrait of a pretty worker in a headscarf is not only an unconditionally successful marketing ploy. Just attracting attention to customers will not do. A truly high-quality sausage without foreign impurities will delight anyone with its natural taste.
Smoked pig ears are an excellent appetizer and complement to Lithuanian beer brought as a gift. Fragrant and extremely tasty, they are also combined with fresh salads and vegetables, and a delicate sauce. These meat products are considered a delicacy; they are finely cut into strips, add sesame oil or fried onions, garlic, soy sauce, and are also eaten in their pure form. It is important that this is also a useful product, contrary to popular belief. Pork ears contain collagen, proteins for normal metabolism, and calcium for bones and joints that are beneficial for healthy skin, hair and nails.
Kindziukas, or skilandis, is a sausage product made from selected finely minced pork meat and lard, seasoned with garlic, coriander, pepper and wrapped in a pork stomach. It is prepared by drying it for about a week. Then it is either eaten or cold smoked for about three more weeks. This tasty souvenir, which looks like a big ball, can be stored at room temperature for quite a long time. Kindzyukas is added to soups, often to cabbage soup or borscht, after wrapping it in cheesecloth for separate consumption after cooking. This product is more expensive than regular sausage because it takes quite a long time to prepare, and only the best parts of pork are used in its preparation.
It is better to buy meat products, with the exception of sausages, not in a supermarket, but in a farm store or at the market from the manufacturer himself. There, the guarantee that the product is made without impurities, and from pure meat, increases.
Drinks and extracts
Where can I buy:
- Trejos Devynerios, Pagaminta Lietuvoje, Kaunas, Stumbras 4;
- market Girstupio Turgus, Kovo 11-osios g. 22.
In Kaunas, special honor is given to honey drinks, so you should not bypass the shelves with them. The ancient recipe for midus is perhaps the oldest on the planet. It is also called the wine of northeastern Europe. It was the main festive drink both at balls for kings and at holidays for peasants. Although it was consumed not only in Europe, but also in Asia, midus can be called an integral part of Lithuanian culture.
This is because in Kaunas and other cities of the country there were so-called honey brotherhoods, whose members made it on religious holidays. Midus can have different strengths, often from 8 to 20 degrees. Honey, water, yeast and other additives such as linden blossom, juniper berries, acorns, and sage are added to it. The product is aged in metal barrels for one to two years.
Three types of mead are available for sale: weak (Bociu) and medium (Trakai) strength with bee honey and acorns, hops, juniper, as well as natural fermentation with medicinal plants (Stakliskes). As a gift, you can purchase sets where all varieties are sold in small bottles.
Popular in Lithuania and in Kaunas in particular is the nectar "Suktinis" - a type of midus. Blueberry, raspberry and black currant juice, poplar buds, as well as other berries and plants are added to this honey mixture. The drink matures for a long time (almost 18-20 months), its initial strength is 50%.
There is a small store in Kaunas that sells an extract of the famous Three Nines tincture. It is not as strong as the alcohol of the same name, so it can be added to tea or drunk diluted. The tincture has a general strengthening effect, improves well-being, gives vigor and activity.
Souvenirs from museums
Kaunas is famous for its museums, which is why the souvenirs they sell are a must-buy:
- the only Devil Museum in the world offers a choice of figurines of this mythical creature at attractive prices and more. Symbolic things are also sold here, which will become a reminder for the tourist returning home.
- the small Museum of Ceramics presents not only exhibitions with historically valuable dishes, tiles and tiles, but also lovely clay, porcelain, and glass products at an affordable price.
- at the M. K. Čiurlionis Museum you can buy books about contemporary art and beautiful postcards with reproductions of his paintings and works of other Lithuanian artists.
- “Strumbas” is a private museum of various liqueurs and schnapps. Here you can not only take part in a tasting, but also purchase amazing alcoholic products that cannot be found in shops and stores throughout the city.
Lithuania is not only about small cities with beautiful architecture, clean air and a mild climate. It turns out that even in such a small country there are many unique things that also have their own history. They exude comfort, warmth, and special energy. Amber is like a ray of light, flax is like a light cloud, ceramics is like an imprint of culture and traditions. Any of the items will remind you of the Lithuanian atmosphere of cozy streets, ancient monuments, large parks. Local cuisine will decorate any evening; their excellent taste will be remembered for a long time. A tart tincture or a sweet drink will help defuse the situation in a close circle, as well as convey to listeners in the best possible way interesting stories about a trip to Kaunas and walks around Vilnius. All that remains is to wholeheartedly present original things to your dear people and enjoy your Lithuanian adventures with them!
